| CURRENT CHALLENGES: - Quote :
- -- OCTOBER 2013 --
ie the hallowe'en edition Challenge A: Costume Party! Draw a picture of any character (or yourself) in the costume of a different character! - the costumes should be established designs, not something you invented on the spot (though using your own character's established costume is fine!) - for a variation, draw two or more characters with their costumes swapped. - you can either scale the costume to fit the new character, or for a different sort of challenge, draw the characters as though they actually stole each other's clothes (with the clothes still the same size)!
Challenge B: ...movie poster! Create a movie poster for your character/story... as though that story were a horror B-movie! (ie, the campy sort of horror films that are hilariously bad and not remotely scary.) Be sure to include a title on your poster; bonus points if it's cheesy and over-the-top. - rough art is acceptable! focus on the overall concept and composition. - need some horror fonts for your poster?
I'm going to leave these same ones open for November as well (in addition to a couple new ones) so no rush! You have a month and a half to work on these. C: __________ So what's this all about anyway? This is a place to challenge yourself by drawing things you might not draw otherwise! Challenges will be posted once a month (I'll try to get them up on the first whenever possible, or at least within a couple days) and you have until the end of the month to draw them and post them in the thread. - I'm not going to impose a limit on the number of arts you can post per month, but remember that the point is to challenge yourself. You should put some time and effort into creating your challenge piece.
- HOWEVER, if you don't have time to complete the challenge as a fully rendered piece, please don't hesitate to post rough or incomplete attempts! Obviously the work should show some effort (don't post a 5-minute scribble) but I'm sure we'd all prefer an active thread with WIPs and incomplete pics than a topic that died because no one wanted to post their rougher works. c:
...And being willing to share work you're not 100% happy with is sometimes a challenge in itself!
- For an extra challenge, you can try incorporating two or three prompts into the same image!
- Please don't post an old artwork that just happens to fit the challenge. (This should go without saying but I'll put it here anyway.) The challenge art should be created entirely during that challenge, unless the challenge states otherwise.
- Fanart is generally acceptable, unless otherwise noted in the challenge. (But original characters are always highly encouraged!)
- While I've included the list of all past challenges below, try to keep most of your posts here to the current challenges.
PAST CHALLENGES- initial set (2013):
Challenge A: Limited Colour PalettesDraw a picture using a limited palette (no more than 5 colours)-- this means no white background and no black lineart! fill your entire canvas with the palette. It's strongly recommended that you use one of the suggested palettes, but if they're all palettes you use all the time, you can pick your own using a site like Kuler or Colour Lovers. Additional notes: - Blending the colours in your selected palette is acceptable, but try to keep the dominant colours in the image the same as your palette. - It's easiest to do this digitally, where you can use the eyedropper tool on the palette, but traditional artists can also do it! Just pick 5 colours of whatever traditional media you prefer. (note that traditional media will blend and layer differently from digital.) - No filters or blendmodes that alter the colours! The point is to stick to set colours. (Ones that don't alter the palette are acceptable.) Challenge B: Unusual PerspectivesA lot of us tend to create art that is mostly at eye-level, viewing the subject from straight on. For this challenge, use an unusual angle! For example, you could draw a picture that is completely bird's eye view-- really try to push that camera angle somewhere crazy! (You may also want to consider what effect using different angles can give a scene.) Challenge C: Genderbending!Pick a character and draw a genderbent (sexbent) version of that character! Be sure to put effort into design-- how might the character's wardrobe change? and their hairstyle? and differences in body type? (If the answer to any of these questions is 'it would be the same', you probably want to pick a different character-- ie, don't just draw the same exact character plus or minus boobs.) Other key point: be sure to keep them in character! If you're doing a fem version of a male character and the entire premise of your costume design is 'remove at least half of her clothes!' I will flip tables. Seriously. Don't do it. >:|
additional note: if you have any good challenge ideas, please post them! (if left to my own devices I'll run out xD;; )

| some ideas I've seen listed:
- music prompt (with this one I specifically want to do a 'draw what the music makes you feel', not 'illustrate the lyrics'.)
- limited colour palette challenge
- redraw an old piece
- draw a picture containing a certain element or theme (that would be specified in the challenge)
any other ideas? C: | |

| Ahh! Limited palettes are always fun~ XD
For ideas I'd add:
- Take one of your favorite scents and illustrate it. (Whether it be into a character, scenic drawing, ect - it's fun to give a picture to something we can't see but only smell )
- Draw 100 of ____ (Draw 100 girls/cats/dragon/hands/etc/etc - This one might be more of an artist work out more so than a prompt though XD It's always a fun challenge to try though, and would be lengthy enough to be something you could work on little by little throughout the whole month..! Maybe this idea could be a separate drawing prompt thread though? Hrm! :B )
Thats all I got for now~ | |

| some more ideas:
- illustrate a scene from a book (avoid borrowing designs from an existing film (or other visual) adaptation-- give the setting/characters/blocking your own interpretation). can be done sequentially or as a single illustration.
- reinterpret a myth or folk tale in a different setting
- draw a non-humanoid fantasy creature or alien; bonus points for your own design! ('humanoid' here defined as being essentially human-shaped, with the same basic skeletal structure-- for this challenge, avoid drawing a humanoid with a different skin texture/animal features, or half-animal creatures like centaurs or merpeople.)
- pick a line from a poem or song and interpret it visually (get creative here; pick something that can be interpreted in many ways, not something with a set literal meaning)
- make an illustration that focuses on scenery. (you can include figures, but don't let them take all the focus.) if you already paint a lot of environments, illustrate an environment that you don't normally draw.
- pick an existing book cover (or movie poster, etc); remove everything except one element. create a new drawing around that element, without altering its placement or the dimensions of the image (though you can draw over the element to integrate it with the rest of the image).

| another idea is to - draw or paint in a style you are not used to drawing/painting in. use water colour instead of felts, crayons instead of paint, or something. draw in the style of picasso, or in the old asian style or in egyptian style or try realistic as possible! edit- this is also a site that is overflowering with crazy ideas for (writing) promps mostly, but we could use them for ideas to draw or paint as well. this sitethis here is also a great site to find interesting pallet ideas that go together! or this one | |

| Loving all these ideas! Some other random ones... -Draw something where the main figure(s) is/are silhouettes. -Draw using an unusual perspective. Like maybe something that is completely bird's eye view. -Redesign a pre-existing character if they were to live in a different time/universe/genre. For example, I once saw somebody redesign the LOTR characters for a modern day setting. Or you could take a modern day character and draw them as if they lived in the 1800s, or in a sci-fi universe. Something like that. -Alternatively, draw a self-portrait if you were to live in a different time or universe. How might you look if you lived in your favourite fictional universe? -Maybe something using a random generator (I love those. xD) The site aaawhyme posted has a ton of them. For example, use this generator and draw a character based on whatever it creates. Or anything using the multitude of generators on that site or other sites. That's all I can think of at the moment. | |

| - draw a character interacting with their setting (not just being in it)
- two (or more) characters fighting
- find an artist you'd like to work with and create a collaborative piece! (bonus points if your two art styles are really different)
- one of those expressions memes-- draw the same character 25 times, making different expressions to reflect a variety of emotions. (don't pick a deadpan character who never emotes.) use specific emotions-- ie, 'furious' or 'enraged' or 'seething' instead of a generic 'angry'.
- pick a character and draw a genderbent (sexbent) version of that character! put some effort into design (ie, don't just draw the same exact character plus or minus boobs; be sure to keep them in character.)
also, I'm wondering... how do we feel about fanart? (I follow another challenge blog that only allows fanart for certain challenges... do we want to allow fanart in challenges?)

| I think fanart should be fine... we should be able to draw any subject matter as long as it fits the challenge. Or do you mean should we allow challenges specifically for fanart only? If so I'm not sure how I feel about that. Do you have any examples? ^^; I think it would be okay as long as it doesn't have to be for a specific fandom. Otherwise it might be unfair to those who are unfamiliar with the particular series or whatever. | |

| no, I meant some that fanart might not be allowed for-- well, for some challenge ideas fanart would be excluded by the nature of the challenge, such as the 'reinterpret a myth or folk tale' one, where the focus of the challenge is on creating your own unique interpretation. Same goes for any sort of 'design a character/setting based on X' challenge-- if you draw fanart for those, you're no longer doing what the challenge is about... But on the other hand, some challenges (like 'illustrate a scene from a book') would almost exclusively be fanart challenges.
I guess I feel like fanart is 'easier' in most cases? You don't have to put any thought into the character or setting... But on the other hand, if someone doesn't have any original stories we don't want to exclude them.

| Oh, okay. I was confused, I thought you meant the blog had certain challenges where you had to draw fanart. But I see now! Yes I agree for those types of challenges, fanart obviously wouldn't be allowed. Hopefully that would be evident by the nature of the challenge as you said, but you can always mention that too with those challenges if you're worried.
But for other challenges I think it should be okay. Like if somebody wants to draw a fanart for the limited colour palette challenge, I don't think that's a problem. I hadn't considered fanart as being "easier", but that's an interesting point. I personally would prefer to draw my own OCs anyway...
Maybe you can just discourage fanart but not outright disallow it? Like you said, we don't want to exclude anyone. I feel like the majority of the people here have OCs of some sort so I don't think it should be a huge problem anyway. But if somebody happens to feel inspired to draw a fanart for one of the challenges, I think it should be okay... as long as it doesn't go against the nature of the challenge, like with the examples you gave.

(I definitely prefer original stuff too-- the only fanart I really do is gifts for friends xD;; )

| So many cool ideas. Um... *racks brain*
- Maybe a speed-painting challenge? The time limit I'm not sure of though since people work at different speeds. >< I guess you can challenge yourself by setting your own.
- Create a character design based on an inanimate object.
I'll keep thinking though. I'm excited for this. *u*

When I went to school we did 15 minutes, whether we liked it or not xD and slowly I got faster ;_;. But yessss, anything that helps us improveeeee

Hopefully nobody would cheat and spend hours and then lie and say it took 15 minutes. XD

| Hmm! For the speed run art things- do you think maybe we could figure out a way to make them a separate event thing? Like maybe we could make it a weekly artist workout thing!
I was going to suggest maybe starting at a time that everyone agrees to try to be online - and then let the timer begin and end within that same day after every posts and meets up that they're ready. But that'd be too hard with the timezones and such XD
But maybe we could still make it a certain day of the week? And everyone has to post up their 15 minute speed drawing within the same day at least.
Maybe that might work better for a '24 hour challenge' type thing instead XD

| heh... yeah, 15 is a big challenge to some people but others might draw faster.
I'd suggest organising a paintchat meet or something so everyone could start and stop at the same time and share in real time, but pchat stopped working for me. :C
But yeah, it might be better off as its own thing. I sort of see these challenges as things that encourage you to put more time and effort in. Unless the challenge was 'make 3-5 speedpaints, then pick your favourite to render into a completed picture' or something along those lines.
another challenge idea I had is to make a character turnaround-- draw the same character from at least three different angles, where the focus is design consistancy. (and possibly drawing the same pose from all angles, like the turnarounds used in animation development-- depending on what sort of challenge you're going for.)

| okay here's what I have so far-- Challenges: - Spoiler:
- music prompt (with this one I specifically want to do a 'draw what the music makes you feel', not 'illustrate the lyrics'.)
- limited colour palette challenge: [http://colorschemedesigner.com/] or [http://www.colourlovers.com/palettes]
- redraw an old piece-- the 'kick your own ass' challenge!
- draw a picture containing a certain element or theme (that would be specified in the challenge)
- Take one of your favorite scents and illustrate it. (Whether it be into a character, scenic drawing, ect - it's fun to give a picture to something we can't see but only smell )

- pick an existing book cover (or movie poster, etc); remove everything except one element. create a new drawing around that element, without altering its placement or the dimensions of the image (though you can draw over the element to integrate it with the rest of the image).
- draw or paint in a medium or technique you are not used to using. use water colour instead of felts, crayons instead of paint, or something.
- pick a historic period/culture and create a piece in that style. (for example: Egyptian wall paintings, Indian miniatures, Japanese Ukio-e, European Impressionist painting... get creative!) alternatively, pick a single artist with a very unique style (picasso, etc)
- use a random generator [http://www.seventhsanctum.com/] to create a prompt and draw what you get! (for example, use [http://www.seventhsanctum.com/generate.php?Genname=quickchar] and draw the character based on the prompt.)
- Draw something where the main figure(s) is/are silhouettes.
- Draw using an unusual perspective. Like maybe something that is completely bird's eye view.
- Redesign a pre-existing character if they were to live in a different time/universe/genre. (For example, take a modern day character and draw them as if they lived in the 1800s, or in a sci-fi universe.) Alternatively, use yourself as the character! How might you look if you lived in your favourite fictional universe?
- draw a character interacting with their setting (not just being in it-- it's easy to fall into a rut of drawing characters as though they were just placed in front of a backdrop. put effort into integrati ng character and setting!)
- two (or more) characters fighting! (is it a friendly sparring match? a duel to the death? a drunken barfight? you decide!)
- find an artist you'd like to work with and create a collaborative piece! (bonus points if your two art styles are really different)
- pick a character and draw a genderbent (sexbent) version of that character! put some effort into design (ie, don't just draw the same exact character plus or minus boobs; be sure to keep them in character.)
- Create a character design based on an inanimate object.
- pick an animal; design a HUMAN character based on that animal. (the point is to evoke the characteristics and 'feel' of the animal in a 100% human character-- no anthro/furry or catgirl-types, please!)
- make 3-5 speedpaints, then pick your favourite to render into a completed picture
- make a character turnaround: draw the same character from at least three different angles-- the focus here is design consistancy. (and possibly drawing the same pose from all angles, like the turnarounds used in animation development-- depending on what sort of challenge you're going for.)
'artist workouts' - Spoiler:
- Draw 100 of ____ (Draw 100 girls/cats/dragon/hands/etc/etc - This one might be more of an artist work out more so than a prompt though XD It's always a fun challenge to try though, and would be lengthy enough to be something you could work on little by little throughout the whole month..! (don't pick a deadpan character who never emotes.) use specific emotions-- ie, 'furious' or 'enraged' or 'seething' instead of a generic 'angry'. (this could go either way-- workout or challenge)
- speed-painting!
any preferences for a starting point? (I was thinking maybe the palettes; those are fun and not too hard)

| For the turnarounds, it could be either (though I'd probably make it a 'no fanart' challenge). The focus is on consistancy and design; it wouldn't necessarily need to be a new design.
If you think it's a lot more challenging to design a new character, you could go with that, but for me the challenge is to create the reference image itself-- I'm personally really bad at references. (If there were ever a challenge that HAD to be a new character I would put it in the challenge text; otherwise you can assume it could go either way.)
